BIOLOGY 427s: CURRENT TOPICS IN SENSORY BIOLOGY
Description:
This seminar studies recent papers in the field of sensory biology.
At the beginning of the semester, the students vote on what topics
they'd like to cover, and then we read and discuss about 5-6 papers
a week, in addition to participating in sensory demos such as writing
with upside-down goggles or navigating Duke Gardens using non-visual
cues. Topics have included human pheromones, why we get itchy, magnetoreception,
music, bioluminescence and many other subjects. Students are responsible
for reading the articles, participating in the discussion and leading
the discussion once. Grade is based on participation. Class is typically
held in Duke Gardens, weather permitting.
Prerequisites:
Bio 201L and 202L, or the equivalent, and one course in Neuroscience,
or consent of instructor.
